Senator Phil Talmadge, a West Seattle Democrat who represented District 34, chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee during the court-mandated redistricting efforts of the 1983 session. The Judiciary Committee unanimously supported the work of a temporary redistricting commission, which redrew the contested boundaries of Washington's eight congressional districts. The success of the commission experiment led to voter approval of a constitutional amendment establishing a permanent Redistricting Commission.
