The department or self-insurer is not responsible for the continuation of preinjury opioid use or any adverse outcomes which may result. For workers with preinjury chronic opioid therapy, payment for opioids beyond the acute phase will not be authorized except:

• For catastrophic injuries (see WAC 296-20-03059); and

• For severe injuries, coverage may be extended through the subacute phase.
